Yoga Therapy
During my trainings both in the 200 and in the 300 hour programs, I choose the pathway of yoga therapy. Given that many bodies are celebrated as unique and gifted in many ways, ultimately we as practitioners need to understand that not one style is suited for every body. Having said that, we as guides also must understand too that is our duty to do the best we can in offering a certain modality when it comes to body, mind, and spirit. I myself entered yoga for depression and uncertainty. The many facets I have personally learned by engaging in guiding physical asana and mindful practice has provided myself as well as others into a holistic approach into systematically changing our habits, listening better to our bodies, opening up more energy channels, eating healthier, so on and so forth.
When we think about yoga, we don't often think of the science that goes along with it. We think, asana, bliss, happiness, awesome. As we dive into yoga therapy in a more in depth look, you may want to consider it with a cognitive outlook into psychosomatic relations. Usually we want to contrive a more homeostasis balance in the functionality of our biomechanics and body mechanisms using by just body movement, we tend to force it to happen when we should allow it to happen at it's will. Allowing yoga to work the way it needs to rather then forcing, based on YOUR yoga, your body, your mind, your spirit.
Holistic Approach of Yoga Therapy:
Rather than treating an illness like the usual orthodox allopathy, yoga therapy looks at an individual's over all physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well being before recommending treatment. A practitioner of yoga therapy treats the symptoms of illness as well as looking for the underlying cause of the illness or dis-ease. Yoga therapy attempts to prevent illness by placing a greater emphasis on optimizing health. A persons whole and well being stems from the interdependency of the body's system. It's called a holistic system of treatment as it includes a number of factors:
As a yoga therapist, we take into consideration personality, age, sex, education, surroundings, occupation, family, life, interests, eating habits, etc as a whole. Preventive is better then a cure. It is fully and truly applicable to yoga therapy. Yoga therapy not only cures psychosomatic diseases, it can prevent and manage future coming diseases by techniques which changes the total human personality and can remove blockage of prana and waste thought. By this method, it harmonizes our neuroglandular system. Yoga therapy can be used as an effective technique or strategy which may prevent or delay disease and illness progression if applied properly and on time. Along with proper diet and herbal care, it's effectiveness will be more. It has been found in researches that yoga therapy is very useful in prevention of psychosomatic ailments. Some ailments to tackle are Hypertension, HBP, Stress, Depression, Anxiety, Diabetes, Constipation, Emotions, to name a few.
"Yoga therapy is not an exercise therapy as modern medicine considers it. Perhaps yoga therapy is mixed in nature which focus on all components of human personality. The true PLACE of yoga therapy in medicine is the field of psychosomatic diseases." - Swami Kuvalayananda
